Female Painters

The following is a list of outstanding female painters and some of their works, as can be found in the museums of Western Europe, the United States of America and Canada.

Female painters have been as imaginative and talented as their male counterparts, but their rle has often been passed by in art history texts. Yet, Artemisia Gentileschi was in many aspects as powerful an artist as Michelangelo Merisi called Caravaggio. Olga Vladimirovna Rozanova was one of the first ever painters to make abstract works (and maybe the earliest). Rosalba Carriera made some of the most moving self-portraits. Maria Elena Vieira da Silva's abstract works can be found in many museums. And so on. The following list is a meagre tribute to the accomplishments of women artists, but it shows how many women contributed to the pictorial arts. The list does not include female sculptors, female photographers and female designers - after all: this website is dedicated to the art of painting alone.

The list of names is by no means complete, nor is the list of works. The works are cited as the most interesting pictures of the artists, exhibited in major museums. I have also seen the pictures marked as 'in private collection' at exhibitions.
The list shows however how many female painters worked in the past centuries and left important paintings.
The list is more incomplete as we near our own century.

The longest list of female artists on the Internet is by no doubt the 'Clara ' database of the National Museum of Women in the Arts at Washington DC, USA. (See under 'Library and Research Center' on that website.) We refer to that databese for more information on the artists mentioned in our list.
